My PADI Divemaster course was the most thorough training I have ever received.  In the Bay Islands I got to know Divemaster trainees at other schools, and no one elses program compared .

International Yacht Training Maritime Dive Boat Crew and Captain Courses

International Yacht Training IYT Dive Boats Crew courses

This year UDC's PADI Divemaster and Instructor training has raised the game once more and we're expanding our amazing and comprehensive curriculum and course offerings and partnering with International Yacht Training (IYT) to offer the Dive Boat Mate and Coxswain/Captains programs.  The IYT professionally recognized boating qualifications are specifically targeted to meet the needs of the scuba diving industry and to develop PADI professionals maritime knowledge and skills including practical boat driving experience. The Dive boat Mate courses were introduced due to demand from the diving industry and cover components relating to health, safety, engineering, legal and competency aspects that are required to safely operate such a boat.

The IYT/PADI Dive Boat Mate is being offered and scheduled in conjunction with our PADI Divemaster and MSDT internships, and for already certified PADI Divemaster and Instructors these courses can be offered as a stand alone program. We will be offering training all year round for the Dive Boat Mate course with a start date of the first week of each month and e-learning is completed independently though supported with our Instructors remedial training. The course allows our PADI pro's to start tendering and driving boats as second command, logging sea time and once an individual has completed 180 days (4 hours = 1 day) of sea time, as dive boat crew, they are eligible to take the IYT Coxswain Boat Captains course, which we also offer at Utila Dive Centre.

The Captains & Coxswains license will be offered each quarter and candidates will be able to take this course once they have completed 180 days of sea time, as crew, will be able to complete their Captains license.

For candidates who are training to become PADI Instructors with us on our MSDT program, there is also the option to qualify as an IYT/PADI Dive Boat Mate Instructor, thereby increasing your own employment prospects and that of the future PADI Divemasters you train, and increasing your earnings potential and own maritime teaching experience.

Please see the following sections for more information on the IYT training and courses offered at Utila Dive Centre;

IYT/PADI Dive Boat Mate Crew (Recommended for all PADI Divemasters and Instructors with no sea experience required)

IYT Coxswains/Boat Captains License (For individuals who can verify 180 days at sea as crew)

There's never been a better time to train as a PADI Divemaster or Scuba Instructor, with a growing dive industry worldwide, but also in recent years the expansion and growth of the yachting industry and recreational superyachts, makes this the perfect compliment to enhance your dive training and employability in dive resorts, and on day boats, liveaboard vessels and superyachts worldwide. Utila Dive Centre is the perfect facility to gain this experience and training, with a fleet of 6 licensed vessels for carrying passengers and dive crew, and with our own on-site docking area, bay and harbour for practice maneuvers, and dive trips scheduled every day to dive sites with mooring posts, and with drift dives, this is the perfect facility and location to gain experience and a maritime certification.

Contact us for more information on gopro@utiladivecenter.com and book early as we have very limited spaces on these programs each month/quarter (just 8 places each month for every IYT Dive Boat Mate course and 8 places each Quarter for IYT Captain/Coxswains course).

IAHD adaptive teaching disabled diver courses utila

Successful IAHD Instructor Trainer and Instructors from the Utila Dive Centre program with IAHD Americas head David Valaika

Several of our staff at the Utila Dive Centre recently qualified as IAHD Instructors, and our resident Course Director Andy Phillips qualified as an IAHD Pro Trainer.  The IAHD Americas is a registered non-profit 501 (c) 3 organisation, that offers training programs so dive partners, and dive professionals can introduce 'disabled divers' to the magic of the underwater world.

IAHD-Americas offers several levels of certification/supervision for divers with disabilities, and now through one of the premier PADI Career Development Centers in the world, the Utila Dive Centre.    Our staff will be able to train divers as IAHD 'dive partners' so they can be responsible and safe dive buddies, and we will soon be integrating the IAHD 'Pro diver' into our Divemaster and Instructor programs, further qualifying our dive professionals and to the dive community, and also to use scuba diving as a powerful rehabilitative tool.

1st ever Utila Dive Fevistal a Success!!!

The 1st ever Utila Dive Festival ended this August and and none of us involved in planning this event could have imagined such a great response - thank you to everyone participating in this celebration of diving, and topside fun, and the local community.

The festival kicked off with the opening ceremony on Chepes Beach on Saturday August 18th, with Pup Morse AKA Scuba Cowboy from Colorado (some of you may have seen him playing at the DEMA dive shows) warming up the crowd at sunset. Pup had a full day traveling and pulled off a great performance in delighting the crowd, whilst registration was taking place, and participants enjoying a island style BBQ and local beers.

Whilst Scuba Cowboy was entertaining the crowds the check-in/registration procedure opened, and registration gave each participant a program guide for the week with t-shirt, and 5 raffle tickets for a draw that night, with prizes including a GoPro Hero II sports camera, an Aqualung regulator and a DiveRite SMB/reel. After opening remarks for the festival by organizer Shell Pitts, a DJ entertained the crowd (several hundred strong) till 8.30pm and then there were several other prizes including courses drawn and anticipation and excitement as Scuba Cowboy and PADI Regional Manager (Central America) Robert Sievens announced the winners. After the prize draws were announced, the music and party continued till around 10pm, as the first diving event was the buoyancy dive on Sunday AM, with a continued daily theme throughout the week where divers got to enjoy specialised events and activities.

utila volley ball dive fest

On Sunday afternoon the volley ball competition was hosted with 6 teams entering, and after several hours of play, the winning team collected the prize fund. Although the sun may have gone down, the pub quiz hosted that evening kept things heated up with fun and banter between over 40 participants/10 teams, and this went to a tie-breaker of several questions, before Utila Dive Centre team 'Mammoth Cow' took the title and prizes sponsored by DiveRite, reels, slates, wet notes, pouches and an SMB.

Sunday and Monday afternoon also had freediving clinics hosted for people who might like to forgo the tank and enjoy the simplicity and beauty of free diving.

Monday morning was the dive shops time to host the deep dive activity, with our divers visiting the deeper walls of Utilas Northside, and many of our divers got to swim with Dolphins, not a bad Monday AM! That same day many participants also conducted a specialized Reef Survey dive as well, with data being uploaded to the Reef groups website. On Monday afternoon Utila Dive Centre ran the side mount and rebreather try dives, also to be repeated on Wednesday PM and Friday PM with full attendance. All our participants in the try dives were entered into a draw with the 2 winners receiving a DiveRite Nomad sidemount system and one of the winners was UDC Divemaster Mike Edgecombe! There was also a tour of the Utila Hyperbaric chamber where talks were given about diving physiology and DCS.

The fun continued Monday evening with a Fish ID talk by local Instructor Adam Lafferty conducted at the Utila cinema, and 50 people listened to Adam entertain and educate about the local aquatic life and behavior, and prizes drawn out to attendees included an Intova light, and also an Intova underwater camera/housing. After the Fish talk Tranquila bar hosted 'Casino Night', this was where all Passport holders received chips to the value of 200 in denominations of 50, 25 and 5. There were 2 tables, one of BlackJack hosted by Brooks and another for Texas Hold em hosted by Dani. The games continued play until players were bust, or the clock was called at 11.30pm, and chips tallied. There were 3 prize winners, #1 received a dive package and adventure dive from Parrots, #2 a $100 voucher at local boutique 'Beach Bazaar', and the 3rd prize (and some say preferred) was a $25 positive tab behind Tranquila bar! Thank you to Adam Lafferty and Tranquila for a very educational and also entertaining night!

Tuesday saw the dive centres conduct a Fish ID dive in the morning, and in the afternoon Laguna Beach resort hosted a pool party at their resort on the south side, arranging transportation from the town, which was an awesome escape to see how the other half on Utila lives! Tuseday night was about local flavour (quite literally) with the 'Taste of Utila' food fair in the center of town with Scuba Cowboy showing up again to entertain the crowds whilst attendees enjoyed a food bazaar with participating restaurants included La Piccola, Big Mama's, Munchie's, Buccaneer's Cafe, and Skid Row Bar and Grill, as well as some good old Dunkin Donuts from the mainland! Everyone ate their fill, including all the local street dogs.

The sidemount and rebreather try dives at Utila Dive Centre continued on Wednesday afternoon and participants experienced a whole new level of diving without bubbles, and superior streamlining on sidemount. Wednesday also brought a beach BBQ at one of Utila's exclusive resorts, Utopia, complete with ping-pong, volleyball, as well as shore diving direct from the resort.

At around 6 pm we took our divers out for their night dive, seeing such cool stuff as Caribbean Spiny Lobsters, King Crabs, Caribbean Octopus, and a free-swimming Spotted Moral. After the boats pulled in, everyone rinsed their gear and headed for Karaoke Night! Everyone got their turn on the microphone with such classics as Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," all the way down the spectrum to Metallica's "Enter Sandman." It was a crazy night, but that's how we do things here on Utila!

Throughout the week participants were also observed in an ongoing treasure/scavenger hunt with over 31 clues to collect, and Thursday morning brought the underwater portion of the week-long Treasure Hunt. Participants went to specific dive sites in the morning to uncover clues of photos that will then have to recreate on land, to go along with topside clues of Utila's most prominent landmarks. In the afternoon everyone went down to Pirate's Bay for Captain Morgan's Dive Centre's Scuba Olympics. Events included Underwater Tug-of-War, Underwater Shotput, and Paddleboarding race. Utila Dive Centre Divemaster Jimmi Larsen won 2nd place and received a Sealife camera.

That evening all the dive boats from the island brought out their finest decor for the first annual Utila Dive Fest Boat Parade of Lights. The boats were decked to the nines complete with Christmas tree lights, strobes, lazers, projectors, and potted trees, as well as many joyful participants rocking out to onboard music. We on Utila have all decided that this should not just be an annual occasion, but try and do it as much as possible!

Once everyone docked in we all scooted up to Treetanic, one of Utila's most unique bars, for the judging of the week-long Photography Competition. Participants contributed photos in five different categories, including Best Topside Shot, Best Macro, Best Portrait, Best Underwater-scape, and Best Reef Creature. The photos were beautiful and were displayed on two projectors around the bar and voted on by all Dive Fest Passport holders.

The votes were tallied and the another successful winner came from Utila Dive Center, Alex Bauer won 1st prize for her submission of a squid on a night dive eating a shrimp.

On Friday all the participants headed to various locations around the island to conduct an underwater clean-up for Project Aware, and Utila Dive Centre pulled out 12 bags of trash before heading for a BBQ on the water caye. That afternoon there were the final special events in freediving, hyperbaric chamber tour and Utila Dive Centre hosted the final sidemount and rebreather try dive, and then in the evening we had the spectacular closing party at Chepes Beach.

At the closing ceremony more prize winners from the week were announced and regulators, BCD's, sidemount rigs, GoPro cameras, Sealife cameras and local prizes including a week in a luxury resort were won. PADI Regional Manager Robert Sievens and Vice President Bob Coleman congratulated the festival organisers for their efforts and successes and we all look forward to next years event. Then at 9pm attendees who had purchased a 'Chinese Lantern' for a donation to Project Aware collectively lit them and released into a beautiful moonlit evening for a spectacular closing, before DJ's continued to entertain the crowds until the early hours.

First ever PADI Rebreather Instructor course in Central America at UDC!

We'd like to congratulate Dean Till, David Stover and Guillemro Peirano on becoming the first ever PADI MKVI Closed Circuit Rebreather Instructors on a course held at the Utila Dive Centre in Honduras.  The candidates had qualified as PADI rebreather divers earlier this year and had since been working on building up their hours and logging dives on the Poseidon MKVI units prior to entering the Instructor course that was held in early February 2012.  During the 4 day Instructor course the candidates, who were already qualified as PADI Scuba Instructors, attended presentations on standards for conducting various PADI rebreather programs, participated in practical workshops covering rebreather assembly, maintenance, changing parts and rigging bail-out bottles.  The candidates also organised and ran confined and open water training dives where they demonstrated skills and role-played problem solving scenarios, and completed a skills circuit, prior to auditing training dives from the PADI rebreather courses.  Now Dean, David and Guillermo are a handful of qualified recreational rebreather Instructors and able to meet the demand for this growing specialised area of diving.

We have evolved our previous referral scheme 'Prestige card' into a new collaboration between the top dive centers, and destinations worldwide. Utila Dive Centre and GoPro Utila have now formed a referral scheme with the following dive operations worldwide;

  • Emperor Divers, Egypt, Red Sea (5 resorts and live-aboards)
  • Poseidon Divers, Dahab, Egypt, Red Sea
  • Buddha View, Koh Tao, Thailand
  • Blue Season, Bali, Indonesia
  • Eco-Divers, Manado, Indonesia

This scheme is in addition to our local Central/South America referral scheme 'TrekCATS', and all our students and divers receive a membership card, and reduced rates (5-10%)/preferential treatment at any of these quality dive operations. No other dive operation in the Caribbean, Honduras and Central America is committed to your success, and opportunities during and after your time with Utila Dive Centre/GoPro Utila.

Party at Water Cay

We had a big party on Sunday to celebrate another successful year at Utila Dive Centre. We closed for the day and took all the staff, customers, family and friends to the beautiful Cays and had a BBQ on the jewel of the Cays, Water Cay.

The day couldn't have been more perfect. Nico cooked his delicious BBQ and we sipped Flor de Cana rum in the sea. Once we finished playing volleyball and water polo.

Congratulations to our recent Divemaster and Instructor graduates Ghislain, Sam, Andrew, Mary, Rory, Lorna, Bertrand, Arnaud and Rhonda!

Utila Dive Centre is a TrekCATS Operator

Now backpackers and travelers can dive Central America the informed way.  Choose from the premier dive operators in each country in Central America, from Guatemala to Colombia on your travels, and when you show proof of having taken a course with a TrekCATS operator, or 2 logged dives, you get entitled to a special rate at all other members!  Not only do TrekCATS dive operations adhere to the highest standards of quality, but they provide an amazing service and a fun time for all their divers.  Search for the TrekCATS group on Facebook to find members and join the group.  Another great reason to come and dive with UDC!
